100% Pignatello aka Perricone. De Bartoli has 2 hectares of Pignatello vines planted in the 1992 on clay-loam soils in the nearby province of Trapani, north of Marsala on Sicily's west coast. The vines are organically farmed and harvested by hand. The bunches are destemmed and fermented spontaneously with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tanks with occasional punchdowns and pumping-over. The wine is aged for a year in 10-hectoliter French oak foudres and is classified as an IGT Terre Siciliane.
The car on the label honors founder Marco De Bartoli's first career as a race car driver. The "Rosso di Marco" is the estate's only red wine. Marco first made it from Merlot and Cabernet, among the international varieties which swept Sicily in the 1980's; eventually he jettisoned these in favor of the native Perricone/Pignatello (whose name evolved from pignatte, a traditional cooking vessel made from local red pignatiddare clay).
