After years of abandon, this once great bastion of Italian wines is now being revitalized by a few key producers. If you haven’t started exploring this area, you’re missing out on the glory of Nebbiolo when combined with local varieties, as well as, a study in the area’s unique soils.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOur friend Cristiano Garella, native wünderkind, is one of the master-keys of the area. He’s helping wineries here appreciate and reinvest in the vineyards and cantine. Colombera \u0026amp; Garella, as the name suggests, is his most intimate contribution among the many wineries he collaborates with. The Colombera part is Giacomo, Cristiano’s long-time friend, and Giacomo Colombera’s father, Carlo, who’s been growing grapes in the area since the early 1990s. Colombera \u0026amp; Garella’s winery and vineyards are mostly in the Bramaterra appellation, though they’ve ventured into the yellow and red-ochre sands of Lessona as well.*\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAt 350-400 meters, Bramaterra and Lessona’s soils are distinctly acidic, quite different from Barolo and Barbaresco’s basic soils. These acidic soils produce wine with lower alcohol than you find nowadays in the Langhe, and give the wines a ferrous, sanguine minerality. These are wines whose structure seems to come from minerality (as slippery as that word can be) more than from tannins.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eJust as in other great growing areas with varied soil, one can immediately taste the difference between Bramaterra and Lessona: Bramaterra’s volcanic soil is composed of crumbly red-brown rocks made from porphytic sand crystals. These wines have a muscular fruit, and a deep, chiseled minerality. There’s something rough yet charming around the mineral edges, sort of like approaching papà Carlo in the vineyards when he gives you a bear hug.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLessona still has acidic soil as well, but here you see a marine sand that’s yellow or red-ochre in color. Lessona’s fruit is svelte, with a delicate, etched minerality – think wild strawberries and their popping seeds.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe cuvée of the different varieties reinforces the above taste profiles. Each appellation has its own guidelines. Colombera \u0026amp; Garella’s Bramaterra has 80% Nebbiolo, 10% Croatina, and 10% Vespolina. The Croatina gives that dark fruit; the Vespolina, spice and briskness. Ferdinando began his conversion to natural winemaking in 2003, and nowadays his vineyards teem with wild flowers in Spring. A wild and thick leaf canopy provides shade to the grape clusters; early-picking tightens the acidity, and lowers the alcohol. Whole-clusters are trammelled by foot, and fermented without sulphur to give an ease and suppleness to the fruit. Here’s finally a traditional Barolista, taking on climate change, being thoughtful instead of dogmatic about making natural yet princely Dolcetto and Barolo (and a few other native Piemonte varieties) – to drink – instead of taste.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWinery:\u003cbr\u003eThe cellar is in Monforte zone of Barolo. Monforte is also a an old-world charming small town you should visit; it is much different than the shaking and moving of La Morra. A total of 21 hectares of vineyards are located in Monforte and Serralunga, with a smattering in Alta Langa. The far southeast part of Barolo is an area off the beaten path (for Barolo at least). Instead of dusty vine row after vine row, there are woods and birds between the vineyards, and Ferdinando has created what looks like an extra-large Koi pond for migratory birds. Walk the vineyards for an ad hoc botanical tour of fruit trees that Ferdinando has planted over the year. The smell of grapes amid apples, pears, apricots, peaches, cherries, persimmons, almonds, figs, prunes, and apple and pear quince hint at the complex biodiversity here. On one of my recent visits, a vineyard worker was taking a break in the shade, and plucked a plum to eat. The area itself is sleepy, a time-capsule from the 1940’s, with farmers that still have that askance look of their forefathers, those ex-Roman soldiers who tended vines in retirement.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere’s a long tradition of making\u003cem\u003e frizzante\u003c\/em\u003e \u003cspan\u003emetodo ancestrale;\u003c\/span\u003e in this area, and Bulli has been doing it for five generations, since the late 1800’s. The Bulli family is humble, easygoing, happy to serve locals everyday from their repurposed horse stall, where all the sparkling in the bottle fermentation happens. La Signora Bulli is especially proud of the medallion coins the family has won for its wines in the late 1800’s. They are a testament of it being a serious winery from the beginning. Her son, Leonardo Bulli, is especially proud of the fact that they never used SO2, in fact, \u003cem\u003esenza solfiti aggiunti\u003c\/em\u003e is written on their original vintage-kitsch style labels since the 1950’s. There’s no faux-retro going on here.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOne key that helps preserve their wines without SO2, and gives them a sprightly character, is the soil.  Bacedasco Alto is the town where the Bulli family has their house and horse-cellar, and it is right next to an important geological park that contains a series of ancient limestone \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Calanque\"\u003ecalanques \u003c\/a\u003efrom the Pliocene period. Think of the calanques near the wine town of Cassis (without the sea ; ).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBetween the amazing homemade salumi and gulping down some Bulli fizz with the family on my last visit there, I couldn’t quite understand a sentence in my notes: “La Signora Bulli says that they are famous for whales.” I mean that must be important, right!? It took me a few hours of digging around to figure out the area is famous for finding a large amount of whale fossils. The local museum has a great \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.museogeologico.it\/il-territorio-5718\/il-piacenziano-25894\"\u003emap\u003c\/a\u003e of the geological park, and a cool \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=pGZ1F-27S_I\u0026amp;feature=youtu.be\"\u003evideo\u003c\/a\u003e of the unearthing of a whale fossil in 1936.**\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThese are the kind of wines we are proud to import: a rich history, complex soils, hand-crafted and natural wines,  good people – and a whale bone connection.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e* We use \u003cspan\u003emetodo ancestrale\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e for the bottle fermented wines. Its vineyards are a few kilometers from the coast, with grooves of ancient olive and almonds trees breaking the wind off the sea. Abandoned and still working fishing ports dot the landscape. Owner Dario Serrentino has always enjoyed the contrasts of this coastal growing area, which he calls ‘a desert next to the beach.’ Over the years, lucky for us, he’s learned to coax extremely elegant wines from this receding coast of limestone, which, he says, is ‘the magic to produce wines with tension, freshness, and complex salinity.’ In Dario’s best vintages, his rosso and bianco wines have a tapering svelte finish, cool and salt-dusted. Drinking them is akin to a dive into the nearby Ionian sea on a hot summer day. Dario has always worked on the family farm in one form or another (his heirloom almonds were actually his first love). He changed careers from social worker and part-time farmer to full-time vignaiolo with his first bottling in 2014. He works only with native grapes, including an herbal Frappato, and a spicy-sour bush vine Nero d’Avola. Located in the town of Barolo itself, the domaine of Francesco Rinaldi was founded in 1870, when Giovanni Battista Rinaldi, the father of Francesco Rinaldi, inherited a vineyard and house in Barolo, inducing him to leave behind his work with the very large Mirafiore estate and set out on his own. His family at that time also had ties to the then greatest estate in the Barolo region, Barale-Rinaldi. Francesco's brother, Giuseppe Rinaldi, was the great grandfather of Carlotta and Marta Rinaldi (the sisters currently running the Giuseppe Rinaldi winery). The husband of Francesco's sister Margherita had the last name Barale and it was they who had the famous Barale-Rinaldi estate (where the current Francesco Rinaldi winery is found). These two superb family wineries have marched down through time side by side, both upholding the unique, traditional style of Barolo that has been championed by other great names in Piemonte, such as Bartolo Mascarello and Bruno Giacosa. One hundred and thirty years later, much of the same techniques are still used in the Francesco Rinaldi cellars to produce some of Barolo’s greatest wines. The current head of the family estate is the spry, nearly 90+ year-old Luciano Rinaldi, who took over the reigns of the family winery all the way back in 1941. Today he is ably assisted by his nieces, Paola \u0026amp; Piera Rinaldi, as they continue to make beautiful wines within the great traditions of Barolo, with no new oak, long macerations and long aging in large Slavonian oak botti prior to bottling. In fact, about the only thing that has changed here is that Luciano no longer crushes the grapes by foot himself, as a new press is one of the only nods to modernity in these great old cellars.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHowever, all of the traditions that continue to be embraced here does not mean that this is a winery lost in the past, as their beautiful wines have never been better than they are today. While the estate of Francesco Rinaldi is most famous for its long-lived and brilliant Barolo bottlings made from two of the regions greatest vineyards, Brunate and Cannubi, the entire lineup of wines up and down the quality hierarchy are made with the same painstaking care and commitment to excellence. The lower level wines are superb examples of their genres, with impressive depth, complexity and classic structures, whether they be the deep Nebbiolo d’Alba made from younger vines not destined for the Barolo or Barbaresco bottlings, the tangy and red fruity Grignolino which drinks beautifully in its youth (a rarity amongst the cellar-worthy Rinaldi lineup) or the round, full-bodied and surprisingly serious Dolcetto d’Alba “Roussot” from vineyards located within the cru of Cannubi.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFrancesco Rinaldi e Figli makes two non-cru denominated bottlings, one of Barbaresco and one of Barolo, made from a blend of different parcels. The Barolo is made from vineyards in the towns of Barolo, Castiglione Faletto and La Morra. The superb Barbaresco is aged for two years in botti prior to bottling, while the standard Barolo bottling is aged for three years in large cask before it is bottled and made available for sale. Both wines are built for aging, and typically will be at their best from six to ten years out from the vintage. Like all of the wines from Piera and Paola Rinaldi, they are beautiful, classic expressions of their underlying terroirs, with well-integrated tannins, tangy acids and beautiful complexity and balance.
